This medal was chosen as the 94th issue of the prestigious Society of Medalists series in 1976.
The obverse bears self-portrait of the sculptor and his immigrant family in seventeenth-century dress. Above, PILGRIMS / ARE WE / ALL; to right, signed ANTHONY NOTARO
The reverse bears a small three-masted sailing ship in the ocean. Below, MAYFLOWER
Anthony Notaro arrived in the United States at age seven and, in the year of the American Bicentennial, went back to the country's immigrant roots. He wrote in the medal's brochure:
"The ship of the Pilgrims was the Mayflower, ours was the Dante Alighieri. Both ships were similar -carrying people from a world they new to a strange land in quest for something better. It is this thought that has made me realize what the original Pilgrims must have gone through and why they were thankful for the bounty and opportunity they found here. This medal is dedicated to all brave immigrants who came to build a great new country."
This medal measures 73mm in diameter and was produced by the Medallic Art Company which struck 1,000 pieces in bronze and 140 in silver.
