"David and Goliath" by Nathaniel Bowditch Choate

David and Goliath 1961
by Nathaniel Bowditch Choate
SOM-64.1
Red-gold bronze with tan patina

This design by Nathaniel Choate was chosen as the 64th issue of the prestigious Society of Medalists series. The medal's obverse bears a massive seated Goliath being armed by five struggling assistants. Around, LET HIM NOT BOAST WHO PUTS HIS ARMOR ON. The reverse bears youthful David cleaning, seated near Goliath's head, cleaning the sword he just used to decapitate his opponent. Goliath's sword and armor are being carried away by assistants. Around, AS HE WHO PUTS IT OFF, THE BATTLE DONE; below, N.C. © '61.

Choate used the story of David and Goliath as a shorthand for war and striving in general. The legends are an excerpt from "Morituri Salutamus" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

The Medallic Art Company reported a mintage of 925 bronze medals with a diameter of 73mm.
