"Sunrise and Moonrise" by Robert Cronbach

Sunrise and Moonrise 1987
by Robert Cronbach
SOM-116.1
Bright golden bronze with light tan patina

This medal was chosen as the 116th issue of the prestigious Society of Medalists series in 1987. The obverse bears relaxed female nude stretched out under bright sun. At lower right, signed CRONBACH 86

The reverse bears languorous female nude on side, trees and house in background under crescent moon. At right, signed CRONBACH 86

The medal uses boldly contrasting patinas on its obverse and reverse sides as a key design element. Cronbach was a medallic traditionalist in the sense that he rejected "novelty for its own sake" in favor of "intensity of vision and freshness of form."

He frequently used the female nude as a symbol, a means and an aesthetic tool; he did so very successfully on this medal.

This medal measures 73mm in diameter and was produced by the Medallic Art Company which struck 750 bronze pieces from a limited edition of 2,500.
