In his "From the Artist" Jones wrote

"Music has always been the most powerful of the Arts for me. After my wife introduced me to George Balanchine's Ballets nine years ago, I have learned to watch the music through the dance. In this way, Mr. Balanchine taught me to appreciate the 20th century composers as much as the Baroques, Romantics, and Impressionists... whenever I hear the music, I see his dancers."

The medal measures 73mm in diameter and was struck by the Medallic Art Company of Danbury, Connecticut. Its reported mintage is 750 pieces in bronze.
