The university was authorized by Kansas Governor Thomas Carney in 1863 but the charter was conditional upon a land grant from the city of Lawrence, or failing that, from Emporia. Former Kansas Governor Charles L. Robinson donated 40 acres of land known as Mount Oread and the university opened for classes on September 12, 1866.
The Latin motto on the reverse comes from Exodus 3:3 and translates to:
"I shall see this great sight, why the bush does not burn."
This medal measures 63.4mm in diameter and was struck in bronze and silver by the Medallic Art Company of New York.
